Make a List

If you go to the store without a list, you’re asking for trouble. You’ll either forget something or buy something you shouldn’t. A list is a must-have for grocery shopping. I use my grocer’s app to make a list, but you can also grab a cheap magnetic notepad from the dollar store and stick it on the fridge.

If grocery shopping tends to blow your budget, remember to make a list and double-check it!

Beware of Bulk

Some people get really hooked on warehouse stores but beware. The temptation to overspend is huge, with prices being extremely low on one item and overly high on another. Unless you know your prices beforehand, don’t hand over your hard-earned money.

You might think of pantries as just for storing dried goods, but your freezer is also a type of storage pantry. When you recognize their potential, you can take advantage of sales. By keeping your pantries well-stocked with affordable foods you like, you’ll always have the ingredients on hand to whip up easy meals.

Almost anything can be frozen, so watch for good deals at the store and learn how to freeze foods to prevent freezer burn.

Be Flexible With Recipes

If you’re shopping for a specific ingredient for a recipe and you see a sale on something similar, think about making a substitution. For instance, if you have a favorite Salmon recipe but Salmon is too pricey, try using Whitefish or Cod instead if they’re on sale. You may find you like the altered recipe just the same.

By being flexible with ingredients, you can save money on the recipes you already make instead of searching for new ones that use cheaper options. This makes meal planning much easier.

Ditch the Junk Food

Some people think eating healthy is expensive, that they’re stuck with buy-one-get-one-free mac and cheese and hot dogs. But what really breaks the bank is a poor diet. You need to think of your health as something valuable that’s worth taking care of. When you cut out junk food and add healthy options, eating well becomes affordable. This is how you take care of yourself and your loved ones.
