Black Friday Deals That Can Provide Year-Round Savings
by Andrea Norris-McKnight
It can be tempting to overspend on Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. But these Black Friday deals can actually be good for the budget and provide year-round savings.
It is estimated that 13% of all U.S. retail sales happen from Black Friday to Christmas (source: zippia.com). Much of that is for gift-giving, but some is personal shopping.
Most of us would not want to get some of the following products as gifts, but buying these products for yourself (for a big discount, of course) can save you money all year long.
Small Appliances
Your oven typically uses more electricity than smaller appliances. An air fryer, countertop convection oven or slow cooker can be an economical addition to your kitchen.
Larger appliances are typically on sale during each major holiday — Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc. But if you find a good deal on a chest freezer this weekend, you could reduce your food bills significantly by keeping your freezer stocked with sale-priced meats and produce.

Streaming Services and Devices
This is a great week to buy streaming devices and drop cable in favor of streaming services. New streaming subscribers can often receive a significant discount to try out a new service. Just search for a streaming service name + Black Friday Deal, i.e., “Peacock Black Friday deals.” Go through a shopping site such as Rakuten, and you could also earn cash back on the purchase. Add a streaming device to your TV, such as a Roku Box or Kindle Fire Stick, and you can access both paid and free streaming services. Most streaming services can also be viewed online on a laptop or mobile device if you don’t want to invest in a streaming device.
Power Strips and Surge Protectors
Most TVs, streaming devices, DVD players, computers and other home electronics use electricity even when not in use. A few strategically placed power strips can make cutting power to your electronics very easy when you aren’t using them. Purchase power strips that also provide surge protection, and you can better protect your electronics from lightning and other power damage.
Also, consider surge protectors for major appliances to prevent a lightning strike from damaging the electronic components. Many appliances now contain computer components that can be sensitive to electrical surges.
Products That Can Keep You Warm for Less
Space heaters, humidifiers, a programmable thermostat and even flannel bedding or electric blankets can allow you to run your HVAC system less this winter. You’ll likely find many good Black Friday deals on these types of products.
Electrostatic Air Filters
If you have a central heating and cooling system, it needs a filter. Many air filters are disposable, but you can also get reusable electrostatic filters that can be washed and replaced.
If you have pets or allergies, an electrostatic filter might not be a good choice since it won’t filter most allergens. However, you might discover a good Black Friday sale on disposable air filters.
A Laptop
Black Friday is a great time to find a good deal on a laptop. With a dependable laptop, you can find a part-time remote job or other online work to supplement your income. It could even help you start that side gig you’ve been considering.
This weekend, you’ll also find significant deals on virus protection software. Computers, tablets and mobile devices aren’t cheap and should be protected.
